LAKE LAGUNITAS
FIND ‘EM!
Lake
Lagunitas (San Rafael, CA Quadrangle)
Marin County Sheriff; 25-26 July 82
While a search dog team was working its way up the
East Fork of Lagunitas Creek, at about 1150 hrs on 26 July, Magener
came out on the Rocky Ridge firebreak (V),
shins bloody, and without his glasses. He was picked up by a State
Park patrol vehicle. Magener said he’d taken the North Side Trail
from Inspiration Point but had missed the Middle Fork firebreak.
Arriving at Rifle Camp, he realized he’d gone too far (but didn’t
know he was only 200 yards from the road). He could see Lake
Lagunitas below him, and decided to strike out cross-country—only to
end up in a seemingly endless manzanita field. (If he’d succumbed
there, he might never have been found.) He rested some during the
night, then struggled out in the morning. The spry oldtimer was
philosophical about his lost glasses: “The manzanita wanted them as
a souvenir of my visit.”
Searchers applied some antiseptic to his shins but he refused an
ambulance ride and his wife drove him home.

SAR Dog Alert, v.1, no.
7, June 1983.
